Learning to match objects that go together (such as a bowl and spoon) is an important skill to master. It helps students to learn how to classify items and identify relationships between them.

Matching items helps a student to think critically and to practice problem solving skills. It is also an opportunity to practice visual discrimination, which is the ability to discern the similarities and differences between objects. Visual discrimination is a critical skill for many areas of learning, including reading.

Activity Examples

Two activity examples are described below.

  • Touching
  • Matching

This is a simple activity that requires the student to touch a matching flashcard when asked to do so.

How to
Place 4 cards on the table.
Example: the hairbrush, key, table and remote control cards
Show the student a corresponding card (eg the lock)
Ask the student to “Touch what goes with (card being held).”
Example: “Touch what goes with lock.”
The student is expected to touch the key.

Prompting for success
If the student is struggling, gently guide their hand to touch the correct card and state the name of the matching card (Say “Key”)

This is a simple activity that requires the student to match a range of flashcards with their matching card.

How to
Place 4 cards on the table.
Example: the helmet, saucepan, stamp and dog cards.
Hand the student the matching 4 cards
The student is expected to place the cards they are holding on top of the matching cards on the table.
So the bike would go on top of the helmet and the lid on top of the saucepan.

Prompting for success
If the student is struggling, gently guide their hand to place each card they are holding on top of the correct card on the table.

Understanding associations is important for enhancing a student’s logical reasoning skills, which means using systematic steps to arrive at a conclusion. Logical reasoning skills assist with making important decisions, discerning the truth, problem-solving, creating new ideas and setting achievable goals.

Here’s a few suggestions regarding how to use these flashcards:

Place 4 to 6 flashcards on a table. Give another flashcard to the student and ask them to match it to its pair.

Naming the object and its association:
Show the student a flashcard and ask them to name the object in the image. Then ask them to name the item that goes with it. For example, if a student is shown the image of a pillow they are to say that “A bed goes with a pillow.”

Once your student has a good grasp of this set, here are a few suggestions to try:

Real-life examples:
Try using real-life objects, especially those that the student is familiar with. Place an array of 4 to 6 objects on a table (such as a paintbrush, bowl, sock and an envelope) and have its ‘go together’ on hand (eg paint, spoon, shoe and stamp). Pass one of the associated objects (eg the spoon) to the student and ask them to place it with the one it goes with on the table (eg the student is to place the spoon with the bowl)

Introduce new object pairs:
Gather object sets that are not included in the flashcard set (such as a toothbrush/toothpaste, plate/fork, swimsuit/goggles and coins/money box). Once again, ask the student to match an object handed to them with the one it ‘goes with’ on a table.
